Fantasy: Team of the Season so far

| jxglrhfg

first_imgWe’ve hit the midpoint of the Premier League season, and now everyone has played everyone at least once. Liverpool have obviously been the big winners thus far having made it through half of the season unbeaten, and that kind of dominance has bled into the Fantasy world as well.In fact, four of the 11 best players at this stage come from Jurgen Klopp’s side, who boast the points leaders at three different positions in our game. You can find those three individuals and the rest of our Goal Team of the (Half) Season below.Goal-Fantasy-Football-Play-Now-Banner Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? GK: Alisson – Liverpool – 19 Games, 45 Saves, 7 Goals Conceded, 12 Clean Sheets = 109 PointsDEF: Virgil van Dijk – Liverpool – 19 Games, 1 Goal, 2 Assists, 7 Goals Conceded, 12 Clean Sheets = 104 PointsThe Liverpool defender may well be the best defender in the league and his Fantasy performances are continuing to reflect that. Since the Dutchman joined the club, Liverpool’s defence has improved drastically having kept more clean sheets than any other club (21) over that period. Now, in 2018/19, van Dijk has already been involved in as many goals (three) as he ever has in a full Premier League season, propelling him to the top of the heap among defenders in the Goal game.DEF: Andrew Robertson – Liverpool – 17 Games, 4 Assists, 5 Goals Conceded, 12 Clean Sheets = 101 PointsAndy Robertson Jurgen KloppDEF: Marcos Alonso – Chelsea – 19 Games, 1 Goal, 7 Assists, 16 Goals Conceded, 8 Clean Sheets = 90 PointsMID: Mohamed Salah – Liverpool – 18 Games, 12 Goals, 7 Assists = 130 PointsAt the mid-point of the season, Mohamed Salah leads all players in points in our game. This has largely come off the back of his 12 goals which are the second-most in the league and, as a midfielder, the Egyptian gets an extra point for every one of them compared to forwards. While it’s unlikely the Liverpool talisman will score 20 more times to meet last season’s total, he has already recorded more chances created (41) and assists (3) than he did at this stage in 2017/18. This versatility should ensure that Salah will remain an elite Fantasy option, even when the goals aren’t going in.MID: Eden Hazard – Chelsea – 15 Games, 10 Goals, 9 Assists = 120 PointsHazard ChelseaMID: Raheem Sterling – Manchester City – 15 Games, 9 Goals, 7 Assists = 106 PointsSterling’s form has dipped significantly of late, but he still makes this list easily as a top-three Fantasy midfielder. Owning the English international is not always a joyous experience though as he’s blanked in nearly as many weeks (9) as not (10).Fortunately, in the Goal game, when Sterling does put up those poor performances you can always replace him with another player that is yet to play that week, so you can gamble on the upside of Sterling while providing yourself with an out if he disappoints. Or, for those of you that prefer to use him as a set-and-forget option, you can rest assured that, come the end of the season Sterling will likely be in our Team of the Year – again.MID: Felipe Anderson – West Ham – 19 Games, 8 Goals, 3 Assists = 95 PointsFantasy team of the season graphicFOR: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Arsenal – 17 Games, 13 Goals, 4 Assists = 113 PointsAubameyang only scored one goal in the first five matches of this season, yet here he sits with more goals (13) than any other Premier League player at the midway point. He heads the Arsenal attack which has created more assists than any club save for Manchester City, which should provide him with plenty more opportunities to score in the second half of the season.Whether he will continue to finish those chances at the same rate remains to be seen as he’s currently significantly outperforming his expected goals, but that doesn’t make his accomplishments thus far any less significant.FOR: Harry Kane – Tottenham – 18 Games, 12 Goals, 5 Assists = 112 PointsFOR: Callum Wilson – Bournemouth – 17 Games, 8 Goals, 8 Assists = 96 PointsGoal-Fantasy-Football-Banner Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.last_img read more

It’s All About the Ride

first_imgIf you look at some of the big players in recreational boards (skateboards, surf boards, snowboards, etc.) the vast majority are California based, but Doug Stevens and his business partner Leslie McCullough Casse are set to make their mark on the industry with their new East Coast business called AsheVillain. The company, just gearing up for its launch party on September 14, creates bamboo and maple skateboards and long boards. That’s for starters. As they grow they plan to include all board sports into their line of products.Based in Asheville, N.C. where it’s currently illegal to skateboard on sidewalks or streets, the pair named the company AsheVillain as a nod to the city as well as a play on the current state of skateboarding. “You sort of have to be a villain to skateboard here,” says Casse.Their first line of boards will be of the naked variety—just the beauty of the wood with a single, small AsheVillain logo on one end. These special edition boards are 2-ply maple and 3-ply bamboo, a combination proven to give maximum strength and versatility.“The Naked Series” offers four styles—a pintail, a “pool deck” board with uplifted tail, an “8.0 deck” classic skateboard, and a hybrid board. In time, they’ll add designs and even have a plan to tap into the creativity of regional artists. “The artists will each design a board for us,” says Stevens. “We expect to have about 15 that will be displayed at galleries and then auctioned off. We’ll then run a line of the most popular designs.”Proceeds from the auction as well as the upcoming launch party will benefit A.Skate Foundation, which gives autistic kids a chance to be part of the social world through skateboarding. The partners are also very proud of their colored and scented skateboard wax that they produce from candle remnants supplied from area spas and restaurants. Their apparel line includes organic cotton t-shirts, snapback hats, and a variety of bumper and board stickers.“Sustainability is extremely important to us,” says Casse, “ having as little impact on the earth is vitally important.”It’s also a focus for them, in an age where obesity is becoming a greater risk, to get people moving.“It’s about getting outdoors, being active, being creative and inspiring others,” says Stevens. “We believe life is about the ride.” Editors’ Recommendations The Business of Delivering Booze to Your Door, According to Drizly’s Founders You Should Read Patagonia Founder Yvon Chouinard’s Guide to Life How to Build the Perfect Charcuterie Board The Rise of Taiwanese Food Chain Din Tai Fung 5 Canadian Lifestyle Brands You Need to Know last_img read more

Taroudante – A college student originally from Iraq was removed from a Southwest Airlines flight in California earlier this month after another passenger panicked when she heard him speaking Arabic.Khairuldeen Makhzoomi, a 26-year-old student at the University of California, Berkeley, said that the incident started when he was speaking in Arabic with his uncle before flying back home to Oakland. The Iraqi student said that he was telling his uncle about the dinner he had attended at the Los Angeles World Affairs Council with Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon. A woman heard him end the conversation with “Inchallah,” and moved from her seat to come back with the police. “I was very excited about the event so I called my uncle to tell him about it,” he said.“I just called him and talked to him about it and everything, and he told me to call him when I get to Oakland, and I said, ‘insha’Allah insha’Allah (God willing),” he added.Makhzoomi knew that something was wrong as soon as he finished his phone call and saw that the woman who was sitting in front of him had abruptly moved towards the airplane door.“That is when I thought, ‘Oh, I hope she is not reporting me,’ because it was so weird,” Makhzoomi said.He said that the police who escorted him out of the plane addressed him first in Arabic before he switched to English asking him “Why were you speaking Arabic in the plane?”Incidents similar to Mr. Makhzoomi’s expulsion from the plane have been increasing in the U.S., particularly over the last year.According to Zahra Billoo, the executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, at least six cases of Muslims being pulled off flights had been recorded this year alone.Makhzoomi says he has yet to receive an apology from Southwest Airlines since he was kicked off the April 6, flight. read more

Research points to importance of tree cover for stream life

| jxglrhfg

Trees play a key role in keeping streams cool, which is necessary for some species of marine life to survive. But when those trees are gone, the water heats up, threatening those cool-water species that live in the streams, says biologist Liette Vasseur.Vasseur and other researchers from the Ecological Research for Education Network (funded by the National Science Foundation in the U.S.) conducted a study last month that measured water temperatures at various points along 11 streams distributed across Canada and the United States. The study, conducted from 2011 until the fall of 2013, compared readings from water temperature probes inserted in sections of the streams that had forest cover and sections that had been clear-cut or had no forest cover. The research examined the behavior of water systems over time and across North America. The researchers found that, overall, water temperatures tended to be higher in non-forested than forested areas of the stream.“Salmon and some other fish, like trout, need cooler water,” says Vasseur. “When you have a lot of clear cutting, the water temperature will increase to a point where it’s not possible for these fish to survive.”She says warmer temperatures may also affect the size of the stream. “In some cases, if the water flow is low, you will get algal growth. The quality of the water becomes poor and fish cannot survive.”Vasseur compares the situation to cities that have large amounts of pavement, creating a heating effect.“It’s a similar principle when you have a stream,” she says. “The water in the stream absorbs the heat the same way as the pavement if you don’t have trees, you cannot protect the stream.“With climate change, we expect higher temperatures. Trees are becoming more and more important in terms of buffering the heat that we’re having in cities as well as for streams.”Vasseur says she and her team are working on the second part of the study that will examine longer-term trends of temperatures in those streams. read more

UN health agency Push back hard against tobacco industry to protect public

| jxglrhfg

Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), made the call in a keynote address at the 16th World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which opened today and is focussing on tobacco control and non-communicable diseases, namely lung and heart diseases, cancers and diabetes.Tobacco kills nearly six million people each year, according to WHO, and more than five million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use, while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Nearly 80 per cent of the world’s one billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries. On the positive side, Dr. Chan noted that the proportion of male smokers is going down in 125 countries. “Non-smoking is becoming the norm,” she said. But “in an ominous trend, in some countries the battle between tobacco and health has moved into the courts,” she noted. Countries wishing to protect their citizens through larger pictorial warnings on packages or by introducing plain packaging are being intimidated by tobacco industry threats of lengthy and costly litigation, according to the UN health chief. “This is an effort to deprive governments of their sovereign right to legislate in the public interest,” she said. “We will push back hard.” Dr. Chan noted that in the Philip Morris challenge to Uruguay’s tobacco packaging laws, WHO has filed an amicus brief with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes. She also said Australia’s legislation that mandates plain packaging, designed to make tobacco products less attractive, is also being challenged in a dispute being considered at the World Trade Organization. Following Australia’s lead, more than 10 countries are considering plain packaging, the WHO said. Ireland became the second country to introduce plain packaging as law. The United Kingdom, Burkina Faso and New Zealand are the next most advanced followed by Chile, Panama, France, Norway, and Turkey.“Bans on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship are not comprehensive as long as colour logos and other branding continue to operate as silent salesmen,” she said.WHO is co-sponsoring the conference in close collaboration with the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.A new online WHO Global Report on Trends in Tobacco Smoking, launched today during the conference, finds that in 2010, there were 3.9 billion non-smokers aged 15 years and over in WHO member States (or 78 per cent of the 5.1 billion population aged 15 and over). According to the report, the number is projected to rise to 5 billion (or 81 per cent of the projected 6.1 billion population aged 15 and over) by 2025 if the current pace of tobacco cessation continues. “This trend indicates countries are making inroads, but much greater action is needed to curb the tobacco epidemic if the global target to cut tobacco consumption by 30 per cent by 2025 to reduce premature deaths from NCDs [non-communicable diseases] is to be met,” it said. read more

Micheál Martin to face questions from grassroots about keeping FG in government

first_img 7,960 Views Micheál Martin to face questions from grassroots about keeping FG in government until 2020 The party is holding its Ard Fheis at Citywest today. Saturday 23 Feb 2019, 7:00 AM Feb 23rd 2019, 7:01 AM https://jrnl.ie/4508275 Short URL 60 Comments By Christina Finn Image: Sam Boal Image: Sam Boal Share161 Tweet Email “WE CAN’T RISK another five years of Fine Gael and its cheerleaders.”Those were the words of the Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin during his keynote speech at his party’s Ard Fheis in 2016. Martin went on to tell his grassroots members that year:“Let no one tell you that there is no choice – that we just have to let them carry on,” he said, adding:“Fine Gael and its cheerleaders relentlessly like to push the line that we can’t risk change. The truth is our country can’t risk five more years of this government.”Fast forward three years and today, at the party’s Ard Fheis in Citywest, Martin will have to sell another story to his members. One in which he has to explain why Fianna Fáil has signed up to keep Fine Gael in power until 2020 – just one year shy of the situation he previously shunned. The Fianna Fáil leader says there is a big reason as to why he has gone down this road. Brexit. However, there are some in the party that are not happy, and don’t buy into the strategy of their leader. They are fed up of biding their time, fed up of ‘getting it in the neck’ from their constituents and members, and fed up of the party appearing to say “they can’t do much better”, which is what veteran Fianna Fáiler Éamon Ó Cuív believes his party is selling. However, one TD loyal to the Cork TD said the majority back the party leader 100% in his strategy, stating that it will pay off, and that the people will thank them for taking the high road at a time when Ireland is facing into a national emergency. But how will Micheál convince his party that he knows best? He said Fianna Fáil had to take the “hard decision” before Christmas to continue with the confidence and supply agreement with Fine Gael. A decision, he still believes, was the right one. While he said not everyone was at the party meeting in which it was raised, he says the majority of TDs and senators back him up on that call.“Of course there is a lot of concern” among members, Martin acknowledged to reporters yesterday, adding that his party members are “rightly angry” at the government over issues such as housing and rental prices. But he believes his members and the public see that Fianna Fáil are keeping the government in place for the greater good. “I think the public get it that Brexit overrides and trumps those issues,” he said. Giving the government time and space to deal with Brexit throughout 2019 is something he stands by, stating that you can’t be piecemeal about the confidence and supply and only push it out every month or so.  Even if a deal is agreed between the UK and the EU and there is a soft Brexit, Martin said, there will still be consequences for Ireland, essentially also ruling out that he will go to the people in that scenario.“I think in fairness we have been constructive in terms of the confidence and supply, I think we have been honourable and gone by our word and we will continue,” he said.  While Martin is happy to keep the ship steady, rather than thrust the country into a “chaotic situation”, as he puts it, he does have sights set on the future of his own career.  Martin said Fianna Fáil wants to lead the government after the next election, and perhaps go into coalition with other “like-minded” parties. After the 2016 election, Martin said the assumption was they would lose seats, but they gained them. It will be the same this time around, said Martin, who adds Fianna Fáil “will surprise people” in the next general election.  Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this articlelast_img read more

We challenged citizen inventors to imagine life-supporting environments on the Red Planet by creating a full-scale habitat design using modeling software. Three winners were recently selected: https://t.co/ffUmjvDyN4 pic.twitter.com/7Xu4JLU1td— NASA (@NASA) April 1, 2019For level four of the competition’s third phase, 11 teams were required to develop full-scale renderings of their designs via modeling software and produce videos that explained their space-friendly shelters. All the models were evaluated based on architectural aesthetics and layout, construction, and scalability. Phases Two and One focused on material technologies and architectural renderings, respectively.Team Zopherus suggested that their Mars shelter could be built by a robotic roving printer. Navy Predicts End of Its Pilot Shortage by 2023

first_img ADC AUTHOR A recent DOD report predicts the Navy will resupply its inventory of pilots by 2023, but thereafter the available talent pool may be unpredictable, according to Federal News Network. The report to Congress offers the most comprehensive view of the current military-wide pilot shortage and indicates the Navy faces the same struggle to retain experienced pilots that has challenged the Air Force. The Navy has a shortage of 1,242 aviators, including pilots and navigators and has experienced high pilot loss rates, especially at mid and senior levels. The Navy lost 611 pilots in 2018, which is 131% higher than the service’s 10-year average of 465 per year in pilot attrition. The Navy’s pilot inventory is about 7,000 pilots and combined pilot/flight officers (NFOs).The report indicates the current Navy pilot shortage was caused by under recruitment from 2005 to 2012 and low graduation rates from the undergraduate training commands and Graduate Fleet Replacement squadron. Many senior Navy pilots are leaving for commercial airlines, the report said.Navy photo by Seaman Joshua Samoluklast_img read more

Inside the Virgin Galactic spaceport sending the mega rich into space

first_img Share your voice Now playing: Watch this: 1:26 3 “I had hoped that narrative was going away,” he tells me before listing the positive economic effects the Spaceport stands to bring to a region where the poverty can often be shocking. In Doña Ana County, where most of the few hundred people with jobs tied the Spaceport live, nearly 28 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. “It’s about building a space sector,” Hicks says. “It’s about having companies like Virgin and Spinlaunch (another Spaceport America tenant) locating here and bringing their families.”Among the many visiting journalists and UK-based Virgin employees in the room, Hicks and I are among a very particular minority: We’re both long-time New Mexico residents whose tax dollars have supported this facility over the past 15 years. And yet, this gorgeous, publicly funded building is restricted and only open to the general public during scheduled tours. Naturally, this is par for the course for any public space facility due to security concerns, but I’m still struck that this luxurious experience and the epic chai lattes will be inaccessible to most of the people who helped pay for it. However, Attenborough insists Virgin’s vision is bigger than operating an orbital joy ride for the elite. “What’s happening here could eventually translate into a quicker and cleaner way to get around the planet,” he tells me.  Tags First look inside Virgin Galactic’s space passenger terminal Now playing: Watch this: 17 Photos Commentscenter_img A 23rd-century tourist guide to the galaxy Virgin Galactic announces long-awaited move to Spaceport… 2:28 Barista Island is the centerpiece of the ground floor Gaia level, but my eyes are drawn toward the two-story windows that make up the east facade of the Gateway to Space building. “It’s almost making you feel weightless already,” says Virgin Galactic’s design director, Jeremy Brown, as he leads us down the corridor from the building’s cavernous hangar and into the Gaia lounge. The landscape on the other side of the glass is classic desert southwestern meets interplanetary future. The dark San Andres mountains backstop acres of scrubland below intense blue skies. The foreground is dominated by the wide apron, taxiway and runway where Virgin Galactic’s dual fuselage carrier craft, VMS Eve, is periodically hoisting itself into the sky. baristaislandBarista Island and Virgin Galactic design director Jeremy Brown Eric Mack The funky double jet is flying sans the rocket-powered space plane it’s designed to carry to high altitude. Today, Eve is performing touch-and-gos as part of its ongoing testing protocol in preparation for carrying commercial passengers to orbit as soon as this year.Standing there in the middle of otherwise empty high desert and looking out onto the scene is a bit surreal. It’s as if the Gateway to Space and its resplendent windows are a building-size set of augmented reality goggles overlaying this vision of the cosmic future onto a landscape that’s more 19th century than 21st. But the whole scene, complete with pilots, Virgin Galactic astronauts and operations people going about their business is as real as the warm mug of chai in my hand. dan-geoegeVirgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides (left) and Spaceport America CEO Dan Hicks inside Virgin’s Gaia lounge at the Gateway to Space building Eric Mack I catch Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides standing at the end of the interactive walkway between the hangar and apron that lights up with each step. I ask him the inevitable question about when the first commercial customer might get off the ground.”This milestone (of declaring the Gateway to Space functionally operational) is big to keeping us on track,” he tells me.And on track means that Virgin Galactic’s founder, Richard Branson, and its other initial passengers will be launched into orbit within months, not years. At a press conference in May, Whitesides said commercial launches would commence within a year. He told me Thursday he’s still comfortable with that projection. Lost in the desertUntil very recently the quiet Spaceport had been the butt of jokes in New Mexico and beyond. It doesn’t help that the Gateway to Space building resembles an alien ship abandoned in the desert. Over the past 15 years, Spaceport America has gone from being a dream to a reality to a nightmare as it sat largely empty in the New Mexico desert several years after its completion in 2011. Like so many space ventures, both Spaceport America, which is a state-owned and publicly financed facility, and Virgin Galactic have suffered cost overruns, technical difficulties and slipping timelines. The darkest moment came in 2014 when one of Virgin’s rocket-powered space planes crashed in the California desert during testing, killing one of the co-pilots.But the outlook has changed over the past several months as Virgin Galactic fully recovered from its tragic mishap and began moving its operations from the Mojave Desert to New Mexico. Virgin Galactic’s VMS Eve makes a pass over the Gateway to Space building at Spaceport America. Eric Mack “This is all becoming very real,” said Virgin Galactic commercial director Stephen Attenborough. He added that soon the VMS Eve will fly back to California to pick up VSS Unity, the spaceship commercial astronauts will actually ride in, and transport it to its permanent home at the Spaceport. Attenborough envisions that Spaceport America will be home to two carrier planes and five spaceships within a decade from now. In a corner of the hangar, large crates store eight rocket motors the company hopes to put to future use. It’ll need plenty of rocket power to work through its backlog of reservations, which it began taking 15 years ago. More than 600 passengers from over 60 countries have plunked down a deposit to ride to space with Virgin at a cost of $250,000 (£205,800, AU$368,375) per seat. Lost in dessertVirgin’s commercial passengers will spend a few days training at the Spaceport in preparation for their roughly 90-minute journey to orbit. Then on the big day, they’ll gather with family, friends, pilots and support staff here around Barista Island for a gourmet meal like the one I’m sharing with Spaceport CEO Dan Hicks in the Gaia lounge.Hicks is a lifelong public servant who spent three decades with the US Army in leadership positions at the adjacent White Sands Missile Range before being appointed to his current gig in 2016 by the New Mexico Spaceport Authority. Friendly and knowledgeable, Hicks can talk at length about the various launch profiles that are possible from this humble spot in the desert. He speculates that it might make sense for SpaceX to launch its rockets from here and then land them at company facilities in Texas. Same goes for Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, which also has a test facility in West Texas. When our dessert course arrives — a shot glass of raspberry sorbet served over a bubbling, steaming vessel of dry ice — I ask Hicks about the criticism that the Spaceport mainly serves to subsidize rich people’s space vacations with taxpayer dollars.  Barista Island in the Gaia lounge at the Gateway to Space building of Spaceport America. Eric Mack The chai latte served at Spaceport America’s Gateway to Space in New Mexico is just as wonderful as the employees of Virgin Galactic promised me it would be. Yes, the frothy sweet tea is delicious, but the signal it triggers in the pleasure center of my brain is just one part of the whole experience. The server who helms Barista Island has a mastery of not only froth, but also service and small talk. And the Island itself is an aesthetic treat, composed of a backlit, white marble countertop. The dose of caffeine and glowing surface combine to create the most warm, fuzzy and loving alarm clock imaginable.Virgin Galactic figures this is the way your morning should start on the day you leave Earth for the first time. Richard Branson’s space tourism company on Thursday said its home at the Spaceport is now operational and welcomed members of the media and dignitaries as its first official guests.  He foresees future competition in the space tourism sector driving down prices, opening up access and perhaps even leading to transcontinental rocket plane flights similar to what Elon Musk and SpaceX have also proposed.”We don’t have the technology right now,” Attenborogh cautions, adding that 98 percent of the company’s efforts are focused on its initial commercial astronaut experience. But part of the long-term vision involves reducing the journey times and environmental impact of transcontinental flight. So perhaps one day, we’ll all descend on the New Mexico desert to jet to Europe in under two hours, but for the foreseeable future a trip to space, along with the preceding delicious lattes and fancy sorbets, will remain the domain of the 1 percent.  Sci-Tech Space Virgin Galacticlast_img read more

Indonesia tsunami death toll tops 400

first_imgRescue workers use a dog to search victims among debris after a tsunami hit Sunda Strait at Rajabasa in South Lampung, Indonesia, on 25 December 2018. Photo: ReutersIndonesian rescuers on Tuesday used drones and sniffer dogs to search for survivors along the devastated west coast of Java hit by a tsunami that killed at least 429 people, warning more victims are expected to be uncovered as the search expands.Thick ash clouds continued to spew from Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island where a crater collapse at high tide on Saturday sent waves smashing into coastal areas on both sides of the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java.At least 154 people remain missing. More than 1,400 people were injured, and thousands of residents had to move to higher ground, with a high-tide warning extended to Wednesday.Rescuers used heavy machinery, sniffer dogs, and special cameras to detect and dig bodies out of mud and wreckage along a 100-km (60-mile) stretch of Java’s west coast and officials said the search area would be expanded further south.”There are several locations that we previously thought were not affected,” said Yusuf Latif, spokesman for the national search and rescue agency.”But now we are reaching more remote areas…and in fact there are many victims there,” he added. The vast archipelago, which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, has suffered its worst annual death toll from disasters in more than a decade.Earthquakes flattened parts of the island of Lombok in July and August, and a double quake-and-tsunami killed more than 2,000 people on a remote part of Sulawesi island in September. It took just 24 minutes after the landslide for waves to hit land, and there was no early warning for those living on the coast.Temporary SheltersAuthorities have warned of further high waves and advised residents to stay away from the shoreline.”Since Anak Krakatau has been actively erupting for the past several months additional tsunamis cannot be excluded,” said professor Hermann Fritz, from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States. An aerial view of an affected area after a tsunami hit Sunda strait at Sumur village in Pandeglang, Banten province, Indonesia, on 25 December 2018. Photo: ReutersRescue efforts were hampered by heavy rainfall and low visibility. Military and volunteer teams used drones to assess the extent of the damage along the coast.Food, water, blankets, and medical aid is trickling into remote areas via inland roads that are choked with traffic.Thousands of people are staying in tents and temporary shelters like mosques or schools, with dozens sleeping on the floor and using public facilities. Many remained traumatised by the disaster.”We can’t sleep at night, and if we get to sleep a car goes past with sirens and we wake up again, on edge,” said Enah, a 29-year-old woman who managed to survive with her family.A local official in the city of Labuan, Atmadja Suhara, said he was helping to care for 4,000 refugees, many of whom had been left homeless.”Everybody is still in a state of panic,” he said. “We often have disasters, but not as bad as this.””God willing,” he said, “we will rebuild.”Destruction was visible along much of the coastline where waves of up to 2 metres (6 feet) crushed vehicles, felled trees, lifted chunks of metal,, wooden beams and household items and deposited them on roads and rice fields.People rest at an evacuation centre at Labuhan after a tsunami hit Banten province, Indonesia on 25 December 2018. Photo: ReutersOut in the strait, Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau) was still erupting and authorities imposed a 2-km exclusion zone around itThe meteorology agency said that an area of about 64 hectares (222 acres), or about 90 soccer pitches, of the volcanic island had collapsed into the sea.In 1883, the volcano, then known as Krakatoa, erupted in one of the biggest blasts in recorded history, killing more than 36,000 people in a series of tsunamis, and lowering the global surface temperature by 1 degree Celsius with its ash. Anak Krakatau is the island that emerged from the area in 1927, and has been growing ever since.President Joko Widodo, who is running for re-election in April, told disaster agencies to install early warning systems, but experts said that, unlike tsunami caused by earthquakes, little could have been done in time to alert people that waves were coming. The timing of the disaster over the Christmas season evoked memories of the Indian Ocean tsunami triggered by an earthquake on 26 December 2004, which killed 226,000 people in 14 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.last_img read more

FCC Summons ATT Comcast and TMobile to Explain Data Cap Exemptions

first_img 2 min read Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals This story originally appeared on Engadget Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. December 18, 2015 FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler once called T-Mobile’s Binge On feature “highly innovative and highly competitive,” but it looks like things have changed since then. The agency has summoned not only T-Mobile, but also AT&T and Comcast to answer questions about their data cap exemption offerings, according to Ars Technica. For T-Mo, that service is Binge On, which allows subscribers of qualifying data plans to stream videos from select services such as Netflix, Hulu and HBO for free. AT&T’s Sponsored Data and Data Perks Program allows subscribers to stream content from sponsors without eating up their data allowance. Finally, Comcast has an add-on service for XFINITY Internet subscribers called Stream TV, which is exempted from customers’ monthly data usage. In the letter it sent each company, the FCC briefly explained the reason why they were being summoned for a discussion, though it all boils down to net neutrality. The agency told T-Mobile that some net neutrality advocates have expressed concerns over Binge On’s potential to harm innovation, as it makes “certain video apps more attractive to others.” It has a predetermined list of apps you can use for free, after all, and you can’t choose which ones to include in the service. In the FCC’s letter to AT&T, it said that it wants to get all the facts from the companies themselves in order to understand “how these services relate to the Commission’s goal of maintaining a free and open Internet.” And in the letter for Comcast, it said that Sling’s CEO raised “level playing field concerns,” and that others call Stream TV a new way to get around the FCC’s net neutrality guidelines.Wheeler told Ars, however, that this isn’t an official investigation, and the agency merely wants to stay informed about the companies’ practices. Either way, the three are expected to schedule a meeting with the commission by Jan. 15th, 2016, at the latest. Register Now »last_img read more

Security issues found in nine password managers for Android LastPass Dashlane

first_imgSecurity issues found in nine password managers for Android (LastPass, Dashlane..) by Martin Brinkmann on March 02, 2017 in Security – Last Update: March 21, 2017 – 15 commentsSecurity researchers of the Fraunhofer Institute found severe security issues in nine password managers for Android that they analyzed as part of their research.Password managers are a popular option when it comes to storing authentication information. All promise secure storage either locally or remotely, and some may add other features to the mix such as password generation, automatic sign ins, or the saving of important data such as Credit Card numbers or Pins.A recent study by the Fraunhofer Institute looked at nine password managers for Google’s Android operating system from a security point of view.  The researchers analyzed the following password managers: LastPass, 1Password, My Passwords, Dashlane Password Manager, Informaticore’s Password Manager, F-Secure KEY, Keepsafe, Keeper, and Avast Passwords. Some of the apps have more than 50 million installations, and all at least 100,000 installations.Password Managers on Android security analysisThe team’s conclusion should have anyone worried who implements a password manager on Android. While it is unclear whether other password manager applications for Android have vulnerabilities as well, there is at least a chance that this is indeed the case. The overall results were extremely worrying and revealed that password manager applications, despite their claims, do not provide enough protection mechanisms for the stored passwords and credentials. Instead, they abuse the users` confidence and expose them to high risks. At least one security vulnerability was identified in each of the apps the researchers analyzed. This went as far as some applications storing the master key in plain text, and others using hard-coded cryptographic keys in code. In another case, installation of a simple helper application extracted the passwords stored by the password application.Three vulnerabilities were identified in LastPass alone. First a hard-coded master key, then data leaks in browser search, and finally a vulnerability affecting LastPass on Android 4.0.x and lower which allows attackers to steal the stored master password.SIK-2016-022: Hardcoded Master Key in LastPass Password ManagerSIK-2016-023: Privacy, Data leakage in LastPass Browser SearchSIK-2016-024: Read Private Date (Stored Masterpassword) from LastPass Password ManagerFour vulnerabilities were identified in Dashlane, another popular password manager application.  These vulnerabilities allowed attackers to read private data from the app folder, abuse information leaks, and run an attack to extract the master password.SIK-2016-028: Read Private Data From App Folder in Dashlane Password ManagerSIK-2016-029: Google Search Information Leakage in Dashlane Password Manager BrowserSIK-2016-030: Residue Attack Extracting Masterpassword From Dashlane Password ManagerSIK-2016-031: Subdomain Password Leakage in Internal Dashlane Password Manager BrowserThe popular 1Password application four Android had five vulnerabilities including privcacy issues and password leaking.SIK-2016-038: Subdomain Password Leakage in 1Password Internal BrowserSIK-2016-039: Https downgrade to http URL by default in 1Password Internal BrowserSIK-2016-040: Titles and URLs Not Encrypted in 1Password DatabaseSIK-2016-041: Read Private Data From App Folder in 1Password ManagerSIK-2016-042: Privacy Issue, Information Leaked to Vendor 1Password ManagerYou can check out the full list of apps analyzed and the vulnerabilities on the Fraunhofer Institute website.Note: All disclosed vulnerabilities have been fixed by the companies who develop the applications. Some fixes are still in development. It is recommended that you update the applications as soon as possible if you run them on your mobile devices. The conclusion of the research team is quite devastating:While this shows that even the most basic functions of a password manager are often vulnerable, these apps also provide additional features, which can, again, affect security. We found that, for example, auto-fill functions for applications could be abused to steal the stored secrets from the password manager application using “hidden phishing” attacks. For a better support of auto-filling password forms in web pages, some of the applications provide their own web browsers. These browsers are an additional source of vulnerabilities, such as privacy leakage. Now You: Do you use a password manager application? Vietnam halts planned eviction of center for bears

first_img Mary Coyle ice cream to reopen in central Phoenix Top holiday drink recipes Sponsored Stories Associated PressHANOI, Vietnam (AP) – Vietnam has abandoned plans to evict a rescue center for bears from a national park, a move that follows pleas from western governments, U.S. senators and international celebrities to save the facility.Animals Asia Foundation, the Hong Kong-based animal welfare group running the center, had waged a public relations and social media campaign around the planned eviction that garnered it international attention. Construction begins on Chandler hospital expansion project “Our priority has been to rehabilitate these bears after their years of trauma from being locked up in small cages and milked for their bile,” Jill Robinson, the group’s founder and CEO, said in a statement Wednesday. “If we had been forced to relocate it would have had a terrible impact on their wellbeing.”The $2 million center, which sits inside a national park 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of the capital Hanoi, is home to 104 bears rescued from Asia’s bear bile trade. Bear bile is used in some traditional remedies in the region. The sanctuary has been in the park since 2005.In July, Vietnam’s military ordered the center to relocate citing vague national security concerns, but Animals Asia and others suspected business interests were behind the eviction order. The daughter of the park’s director, Do Dinh Tien, is one of four shareholders in a planned ecotourism project there. In September 2011 Tien asked the agriculture ministry to approve that project and two others. But Tien denies he has ever planned to evict the bears.Prime Minister Dung said in a statement late Tuesday that the center can stay and continue with a planned expansion, and that Tien will be “severely dealt with” if violations are discovered. Comments   Share   Former Arizona Rep. Don Shooter shows health improvement Animals Asia says there are about 2,400 bears living on bile farms in Vietnam, and more than 10,000 in neighboring China. In November, 10 conservation groups, several foreign embassies and U.S. politicians wrote to Prime Minister Dung urging him to not close the center. Seven Democratic U.S. representatives said in their letter that the military’s national-security claim was “questionable.”British comedians Stephen Fry and Ricky Gervais regularly tweeted to their millions of followers about the planned eviction. American actress Ali MacGraw visited the center late last year.Conservationists said the planned eviction was an example of how development pressures often trump conservation agendas in Vietnam, which has less than 1 percent of the world’s land but about 10 percent of its species. Vietnam’s poor enforcement of environmental laws is adding to international criticism of its ruling Communist Party, which faces scrutiny over its human rights record and its management of a faltering economy.(Copyright 2013 The Associated Press.
